MOSQUITOSCIENCE 中文 Español

LOGBOOK · 2026-10-10 · SOURCE: PREFEITURA DE ANÁPOLIS, 5 OCT 2026

Wolbachia, planted as eggs.
Don't expect a result this season.

On Monday 5 October the city of Anápolis, in Goiás, started putting out what it calls Wolbitos. Not a cloud of adult mosquitoes tipped from a van. Cups. The municipal notice says more than 5,000 points have already been mapped for egg-release devices, recipientes with eggs of Aedes aegypti that carry the bacterium Wolbachia. The official launch was at the municipal theatre, with the Ministry of Health, Fiocruz, Wolbito do Brasil and the state government in the room. The city's own sentence on timing is the one worth keeping: results are expected to begin showing in at least two years.

That sentence is the whole article. Brazil is in the middle of a method that has a real evidence base and a slow clock, and several cities are starting a new round of it in the same October. Cambé, next to Londrina, has a release planned from 22 October: 26 weeks, 885 points, a stated reach of more than 34,000 people, in neighbourhoods where dengue seasons have historically begun. Londrina's second phase is on the same date, covering districts the 2024–2025 round missed. None of these announcements is a result. They are a start.

Anápolis is not tipping adults into the street. The device holds eggs. The mosquitoes that hatch already carry Wolbachia, and they pass the bacterium on when they breed. Illustrative staging, not a photograph of the Anápolis depot.

What the bacterium actually does

Wolbachia is common in insects and absent from wild Aedes aegypti. Put it into that mosquito and dengue, Zika and chikungunya viruses have a harder time replicating inside it. The mosquito is not genetically modified. The bacterium is inherited, so a released population can, over generations, become a local population. That is why the unit of work is a mapped point and a season of releases, not a spray truck, and why a city that starts in October is telling residents not to look for a quieter wet season this year.

Anápolis chose the egg device rather than adult release. The notice is explicit: containers of eggs go to pre-chosen sites; adults are not let out along the streets. After installation the city says it will monitor whether Wolbachia is actually present in the local mosquitoes, which is the only early number that means anything. Case counts two months from now will not be that number.

A tool, not a substitute

Cambé's own coordinator said the quiet part in the radio piece. The technology arrives in a year when the city has only 129 confirmed dengue cases, well under previous years, and rain plus heat still worry them. Residents are told to keep tipping standing water. Wolbachia is an added tool. It does not retire the breeding site.

That is the line this logbook already uses for traps. A method can be real in a trial and still leave the patio as the household's job. Egg cups on 5,000 corners do not see the saucer under the pot, the gutter, the bottle on the roof. The ten-minute yard check does. The warning signs do not change because a city has started a two-year establishment.

Two things this page will not do. It will not treat three municipal starts as a national victory. And it will not reopen the Butantan-DV pause: that file is a vaccine-safety signal, and these cups are a mosquito. Different objects, different clocks. When Anápolis publishes the first monitoring figure for Wolbachia prevalence in its mosquitoes, that number belongs here. A dengue case count from November does not.
